Siva and Sakti
This retreat explores the mythology of Siva and Sakti, and the ritual enactment of their divine struggle for intimacy in the somatic practices of yoga. More than archetypes of gender, Siva and Sakti are the elemental forces of consciousness and creative power that combine to shape our world, and their erotic entanglement is the key metaphor of Hatha Yoga.
In this retreat, we contemplate that metaphor through the traditional mythology of Siva and Sakti, where we uncover profound insights about the nature of love, longing, loss and the ecstatic bliss of intimacy with other beings. To contemplate these stories, and to recognize ourselves within them, is to recognize our own lives as the gracious unfoldment of something unbearably sweet.
And rather than confine this mythology to our heads and hearts, we also explore it viscerally through the somatic practices of Hatha Yoga. We draw from the mythology a certain idea of alignment, which we explore in our postural forms, together with a spirit of devotion that quickens our practice within. Indeed, when we contemplate them internally, the stories of Siva and Sakti can give us a richer and more expansive sense of what we are doing when we practice yoga. They can help us see that with every breath, we are touching something sacred, and with each movement, we are participating in something sublime.
